Description about the painting:

Avalokiteswar, the 'compassionate one', is presented here as Chintamani, the god of wealth who seeks to rid the world of poverty. In his left hand is the branch of the wish-fulfilling Kalpabrikshya tree, whose munificence provides the backdrop to the figures in this Poubha, while the right hand gifts jewels to an old man. The deity's compassion is represented by the female form who is seen handing wealth to chubby Yakshya. This painting refers back to the myth that Lokeswar, born of a merchant family in Kashi, grew to e kind and generous and remained charitable in old age. Eventually, his wealth and property ran out, but ever-determined to achieve his goal of alleviating poverty, the legend says he crossed rugged terrains and fought evil spirits to acquire the Kalpabrikshya, whose bounty provides for all living creatures. The female form standing with the avatar is not Chintamani's consort but his own manifestation of compassion. The transparency in the shawl on the female form is the result of a technique innovated by the artist. The grandeur of the minutely decorated Kalpabrikshya is worth studying at length, for it provides insights into the artist's attention to fine and evocative detail.
