Ganesh

Description about painting:

Ganesh is among the most popular of the many deities that populate the Valley of Kathmandu in iconography and in spirit. This popularity probably stems as much from his cherubic composite image emanating innocence and playfulness, as from the fact that he is first and foremost the god of good tidings. Ganesh, or Ganapati, is associated with good fortune, auspicious beginnings and the overcoming of obstacles. Here, the twelve-armed manifestation of Ganesh is shown dancing on a mouse, his vehicle, which stands atop a sacred lotus. He carries objects that help destroy ignorance, for instance the khadga (sword) and the kapala (skull bowl filled with blood, or man's defilements, signifying bad will), with which to save the rest of us from desolation. The Poubha-based images of Ganesh give him a wide face and high cheek-bones. In this Poubha Ganesh's trunks of the deity are not over-emphasized and instead tend to meld with the face and body. In this painting, Ganesh is bedecked with ornaments, while the surrounding ether is filled with a profusion of deities.
