Erina Tamrakar's paintings have been undergoing a metamorphosis over the years. A decade ago, her paintings bore the hallmark of Prashant Shrestha's legacy. During this period, the rural life of the Newar community featured in her works. A murky palette of green and blue seemed to envelop her paintings, and create an atmosphere of oppressive gloom within the confines of Erina's canvas. In the last five years, Erina's imagery has been undergoing a subtle but definite change which is very much in keeping with the events in her personal life.

In 2002 Erina Tamrakar married her colleague and fellow artist Asha Dangol. This union marked the beginning of a celebration of the female form in her work. Though the blue and green hues remained, rapturous women emerged in Erina's canvas celebrating their sensuality in discreet isolation. Erina Tamrakar linked the woman in her canvas with water to mirror the joyous flow of her own emotions. The image of a woman soaked in the rain or with an umbrella, of women bathing and combing their sensuous tresses are the enduring images of this period. A few years later, Erina Tamrakar celebrated the life growing in her own womb and the voluptuous form of a woman expectant with child began to appear in her paintings. After the birth of her son in 2003 Enira painted several images of Mather and Child. A new series of work evolved from this period and cherubic infants made their debut in her paintings. This phase was blissfully brief as Erina Tamrakar buckled up to face new challenges in her life and in the sphere of her own art world.

In her most recent work, Erina Tamrakar has finally bid adieu to her old color palette and found a new motifs to express her inner most emotions. The leaf is used as motif to link or root the woman in nature In some of her paintings a lattice work of leaves create a zenana-like situation where the sensual female form in hidden from public view. In others, a solitary woman can be seen in a tangle of trees and of mosaic of leaves. None of Erina's women look directly at the viewer- the woman that she paints may well be mirror reflections of her own self: shy, pensive, earthy and sensual looking outward to nature for inspiration...a woman yearning to be released from the mundane rituals of day to day living and more at ease with nature than in the urban incarceration of Kathmandu city. Erina's latest works made in Manang reflect a confidence and mastery that surpasses her early work and we are confident that her forays to the remote regions on Nepal will yield exciting works when the artist can establish a direct communion with nature.
