Urmila Yadav is associated with Janakpur Women's Development Center(JWDC) and her paintings are rooted in traditions which Mithila women have passed down through generation. Urmila Yadav like other women from JWDC, under grant from the Ella Lyman Cabot Trust, learnt how to tranfer her wall designs to paper without losing her distinctive styles and developed skills in compostion as well as in use of color and line.

The artist's  pleasure in the development of a profession, and in new-found freedom to express themselves through painting, is reflected in the story she tells.

In my family there was no money left for school. Instead my father arranged my marriage when I was 14 years old. It took five months to find the right boy. My father considered three or four boys. I did not know my husband before my marriage, but I also did not want to. I completely trusted my father. My expectations of marriage were high but it did not work out as I expected. We have little money and life is hard. It is not so easy to find good work.

When I was ten I learned painting from my mother and sister. In our caste, we mainly decorate our houses with images of daily life. After my marriage I painted my house. One day a foreigner  came and liked it. So I got chance to take part in a test and I passed. It has been eleven years now that I have worked in JWDC. It is good to have a regular income, but still it is not easy to pay all the fees for school. Since I do not have a daughter I also take care of all the housework.

My favorite designs were drawn from daily life and I also like to paint images of elephants. Work was given to me here because of the elephant motif on the wall of my house. Often I paint two elephants offering flowers  to God Shiva.

Being a member of the center has helped me a lot. I can share all my feelings with my colleagues. Also I have learned abut the importance of education for children, sanitation and about how to talk openly to strangers.

Till date, her work has been exhibited in the USA, UK , the federal republic of Germany, Australia and Belgium.
